Q. Why should you use tanning products to achieve a dark, healthy tan?
The secret behind the success of indoor tanning lotions is maximum UV absorption, which causes increased melanin production. Melanin is the pigment in the skin that darkens when exposed to UV rays. Because moisturized, healthy skin tans more quickly, our products formulas are fortified with essential nutrients and moisturizers to accelerate the tanning process. In addition, these same essential vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants protect the skin from free radicals and supply it with the valuable nourishment it needs to stay healthy and young looking.
Q. I’ve heard so much about free radicals and antioxidants. How do these products protect my skin from free radicals and other aging ills?
The cells in your body use oxygen to generate energy, but in the process toxic substances called free radicals are created. Free radicals roam the body damaging vital cell structures. It is this damage that’s believed to cause many of the aging ills, for example, wrinkles, lines, etc. An antioxidant is any vitamin that reacts in an opposite manner to oxygen. These products contain all the necessary vitamins and antioxidants necessary to neutralize free radicals.
Q. Which lotion is the right one for me?
We’ll help you determine your skin type and then recommend the best tanning products. With over thirty different formulas to choose from, there's a product and price level that's just right for you.
Q. Can anybody tan?
Our tanning professionals can help you determine the type of tanning best suited to your skin type. The six basic skin types are shown below:
Skin type 1: Always burns, never tans
Skin type 2: Burns easily, tans slightly
Skin type 3: Sometimes burns, tans gradually
Skin type 4: Burns minimally, always tans well
Skin type 5: Burns rarely, tans deeply
Skin type 6: Almost never burns, deeply pigmented
Q. What should I wear in the tanning bed?
Since each tanning bed is in a private room, you can wear (or not wear) whatever you are most comfortable in.
Q. Do I have to wear eye protection?
Yes, law in most states requires it because eyelids are not thick enough to protect your eyes from UV damage. Sun Lounge provides FDA-approved eyewear at no charge in each tanning room.
Q. Why are lotions necessary?
Tanning without a lotion will deplete your skin of its much-needed moisture. Lotions can help stimulate the production of melanin so that your skin tans more quickly, gets darker and keeps its tan longer. Plus, our tanning lotions have moisturizers that keep your skin soft and healthy. Our premium lotions deliver vitamins, moisturizers, oils, and other ingredients to revitalize the skin and encourage melanin production, which gives you a tan appearance.
Q. Why is moisturized skin important for a tan?
Healthy, moist skin will tan quicker, get darker and keep its tanned appearance longer because the melanin is produced rapidly and the skin also will not exfoliate as quickly when it is properly moisturized.
Q. Do I need an appointment to tan?
No appointments are required at any of our San Diego County, Sun Lounge Tanning Salons. Since our tanning centers have more beds than the average tanning salon, you should be able to get a bed whenever you want with minimal or no waiting time. Remember to ask the about our Unlimited Tanning Membership.
Q. I'm pregnant. Is it safe for me to tan?
Medical professionals do not know the affects of heat on the unborn child. We recommend that you use our Stay & Save program to temporarily suspend your tanning membership.

Q. How do I know the beds are clean?
We use FDA-approved cleaning solutions after every customer's tanning session. The store manager will be happy to show you our cleaning logs. The solution is tested daily to ensure proper sanitizing properties exist.
Q. How often do you change the bulbs in each bed?
We follow the manufacturer's guidelines for bulb replacement so that you will achieve the best results from your sessions. We typically change our bulbs when they have reached 80% of their capacity so your tan doesn't suffer from weaker UV rays.
